Kodiak Island, Alaska

AlaskaOPUS OP4The Cardin FamilyTowed by Ford F-150July 2024

The Cardin family took their OP4 somewhere most trailers never go: Kodiak Island, Alaska. Getting there means the Tustumena ferry, a nine-hour crossing from Homer that takes vehicles up to 40 feet, camper included.

Five days and four nights on the island covered Fossil Beach, Surfers Beach, the Chiniak Highway, Anton Larsen Bay, the Kodiak wind turbines and Fort Abercrombie State Historic Park. In between: fishing, tide pools, forest hikes and keeping a respectful distance from the island's famous brown bears, which can weigh up to 1,400 pounds.

Nic Cardin's advice for anyone following in their wheel tracks:

"Be flexible as the strait around the Barren Islands can be spotty. Delays are common."

Remote island, ferry timetables and bear country: the kind of trip where a camper that sets up in minutes and tows behind the family F-150 earns its keep.
