Trip Details:

The entire Opus Camper crew along with six owners explore Lone Pine and the surrounding Alabama Hills in the winter of 2023. These adventure addicts spent 6 full days in the desert to get a job done!

“We set up basecamp at Independence Canyon Campground. It was BLM run and we were able to book our spots online very easily. There are much cooler spots nearby to camp at, but we had a large group and needed a location that could fit eight trailers.”

We set up basecamp at Independence Canyon Campground. It was BLM run and we were able to book our spots online very easily. There are much cooler spots nearby to camp at, but we had a large group and needed a location that could fit eight trailers.

Some of the cooler places we explored inlclude: Cerro Gordo – All the trailers made it fine – We actually brought the OP15 to the top of the cliffs with a beautiful view of the salt flats. No problems with the trailers.

“This trip was busy because we had a lot to accomplish, and unlike most camping trips that should be quite relaxing, we packed a lot of activity into 6 days.” – Chelsea Irwin

The Ghost Town at Cerro Gordo is also a great drive – This place is really cool, there are people living there full-time, and one of the men has a youtube channel all about it, check it out – I think it’s called I bought a Ghost Town or something.

Some really awesome views and nice places to hike near Movie Rd in the Alabama Hills. A lot of good camping spots tucked into rocks as well.

Winter camping is always a risk but It was very cool at night (this was February and I think it got down to 14 degrees) – But everyone was nice and toasty with heaters inside the trailers.

There was some decent fishing locations and good dirt biking locations very close to the base camp at independence creek. Also cool places for mountain biking off Movie Rd. in the Alabama hills.

Regarding towing, there are some locations off of movie road that were very tight – I would not tow the OP15 to our first filming location. The first day we towed the OP LITE through some narrow rocks and I was more concerned about the truck than the trailer, but the OP LITE is quite narrow. The OP4 was a little sketchier – watch the side rack on the driver’s side as it adds almost 1 ft to your clearance.

The drive up to Cerro Gordo was steep – so if you’re afraid of heights like my husband, you might need Russ to drive your truck down for you 😉
